Activities in Oahu

Things to do while in Oahu, Hawaii

Paradise Cove Luau

Paradise Cove Luau

This luau is probably the best luau on the island for the family. There are many others just as good but this one is our family favorite. It’s a little farther than some others so think about it before you book. The food is really good and the entertainment is excellent. They are well known to bring some of the audience up on stang to do a dance or two. Completely humiliating to me since I can’t dance and do not like the public eye, lol.

There are so many activities for the kids to do, more so here than any other luau on the island. My girls really loved the henna tattoos and of course the birds sitting on their shoulders. The drinks are good but they may be watered down a little, but other than that I really think this is the best luau for the money. If you going to be on the other side of the island then you would want to visit the Polynesian Cultural Center. There they have a great Luau however that one is much larger and less intimate. You are sitting in stadium seating and watching from a distance.

Hanauma Bay – Snorkeling

Hanauma Bay

The genuinely jaw-dropping Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is home to some of the best snorkeling in Oahu as well as a popular sandy beach. Hanauma Bay is known for having the highest concentration of fish in Hawaii, making it a premier snorkeling hot spot. Although many sunbathers, snorkelers, and paddleboarders frequent this beautiful locale, it has the allure of a secluded beach thanks to the bay’s crescent shape.

This bay is known for its Humuhumunukunukuapuaa (Hawaii’s state fish) as well as yellow tangs, trumpetfish, millet butterflyfish, and angelfish. Green sea turtles are also thriving here, so you’ll likely get to meet some during your underwater adventures.

Three-Star Deluxe Sunset Dinner & Show

Three Star Sunset Dinner & Show

They claim to be Hawaii’s largest sunset dinner cruise ship, the Star of Honolulu. I actually think this is true. They sail out of Honolulu Harbor to Diamond Head, which gives views of the sunset and Waikiki city lights. There are 4 floors of walk-around decks and a 60-foot high observation deck. The food is very good for a diner cruise but not high-end restaurant quality. Remember they are serving to the masses on a ship.

The Hawaiian entertainment is well worth the price. We have gone on this cruise one other time and I would say out of the 4 others cruises we tried this was probably the best one. The ship was clean as were the table settings so for us that was defiantly a plus. I added this to our list as a fun family activity even though it’s a more relaxed so going experience.

Pearl Harbor USS Arizona Memorial & USS Missouri Battleship Tour

Pearl Harbor

Called Pu’uloa, meaning “long hill,” or Wai Momi, literally, “water of pearl,” by early Hawaiians, Pearl Harbor, so named because of the abundance of pearls once found within its protected waters, is the largest natural harbor in the State of Hawaii and the number one visitor destination on Oahu. Today, Pearl Harbor remains an active military base.

Headquarters of the Pacific Fleet, and a National Historic Landmark that’s home to four unique attractions: from the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that started it all, to the surrender of the Japanese on the deck of the mighty Battleship Missouri. These four historic sites together tell the story of the War in the Pacific, commemorating the accomplishments of a previous generation.

Oahu Sunset Cruise, Waikiki Catamaran

Oahu Catamaran

We are often told that our nightly sunset sail in Waikiki was a fantastic experience and that our catamaran crew was accommodating, friendly, and highly experienced. The sunset tour is often led by Captain Krash, having well over 20 plus years of experience on sailing charters in Waikiki. Really it’s a relaxing way to spend the evening aboard the Kahala Kai catamaran.

On the sunset cruise tour, you’ll experience some amazingly great views of the Waikiki shoreline and the famous Diamond Head crater. Even the locals consider our catamaran charter as one of the best, a highly recommend cruise at sunset. Even at sunset we often see Hawaiian Sea turtles and the signature rainbows over the Waikiki skyline.

Haleiwa Shark Tours

Oahu Shark Diving Tours

As the North Shore’s only shark cage diving experience owned and operated by Native Hawaiians, Haleiwa Shark Tours is the most authentic adventure available. The sacred and culturally significant mano (shark) is a powerful apex predator to share with visitors and locals alike. Hawai‘i is home to approximately 40 different shark species, all of which serve as caretakers of the ocean by removing sick, injured, and diseased animals, thus maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

Not only are sharks essential players in healthy marine life populations, but they are also ‘aumākua to many Hawaiians — a family god, a deified ancestor reborn in shark form. There are many beautiful legends in our Hawaiian history of sharks acting as spiritual counselors, protecting family members from drowning or aiding in food supply for fishing families, and they’re even a central figure in the Hawaiian Islands’ creation story.
